TCU Book Club

As Lit Forum Moderator, I am floating the idea of a TCU Book Club. Like Oprah, you know.

Any interest in this? Any book suggestions?

I am thinking part of the problem with the Lit Forum at present is the lack of common ground for discourse. Since books fall slightly outside the pop-culture realm of film, music and tv, it seems new topics can only interest the select two or three forum members who have read the book in question.

I'm thinking we should compile a list of book suggestions into a poll and do this thing.

Rest assured, Rainfall, in your correct usage of "i.e." I was also confused about this, so I did some research.

I love this idea, and Anna - good choice of starting book.  I can be a bit slack on the reading front so would love a purpose driven reason to read more and broaden my literary horizons.

Ah, that was gonna be my suggestion! I haven't really read any other outstandingly good books, so I have nothing to contribute. Other than backing up Anna   .

I would second The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time even though I have already read it. It is just that good.

Here is a teaser:

It was 7 minutes after midnight. The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears' house. Its eyes were closed. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog. The points of the fork must have gone all the way through the dog and into the ground because the fork had not fallen over. I decided that the dog was probably killed with the fork because I could not see any other wounds in the dog and I do not think you would stick a garden fork into a dog after it had died for some other reason, like cancer for example, or a road accident. But I could not be certain about this.

Oh, it's so good.

For future consideration:
 Driving Mr. Albert by Michael Paterniti - nonfiction with a narrative arc by a fantastic journalist who understands that sometimes real life has metaphor and symbolism stronger than fiction can ever evoke.  

Hell, don't wait for there to be some sort of book club - just read it.

I'm up for Curious Incident. It's one of those that I keep picking up in the bookstore and then somehow keep picking something else instead.

Since there appears to be growing consensus in favor of Incident, I am going to forgo a democratic poll and officially announce the commencement of the TCU Book Club's reading of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.

I should also mention that I will not be able to devote any time to this until after Monday when I have my "final review" (an innocuos euphemism meaning "hell on wheels"). But all should feel free to start reading and posting at their leisure and according to their own schedules, proclivities, and interests.

I'm thinking v. unstructured...analytical, emotional, tangential, etc.
