The Village

Had a big discussion with Crazy Janeski the other night about this one - she thought it was thought provoking and profound, I thought it had some nice moments but in the end was the storytelling equivalent of a knock-knock joke.  Which is basically what I think of all his films (except for the 6th Sense, which I was the only person in America who hated.)

I actualy didnt like 6th sense. I saw the punch line more or less from the start... seemed obvious to me. So whatever.

I haven't seen it yet, but as I'm only in the states for 2 weeks I think I'll have to spend my small amount of time seeing good movies.
Perhaps I can comment on this when it arrives on video.

I enjoyed Signs when I thought it was supposed to be a comedy.  Then people told me it wasn't supposed to be funny, so I changed my official position on it and thought it sucked henceforth.

(Although it should be said that, drama or comedy, I still like the part when a muppet invades earth.)

As to The Village, it didn't even look funny.

I liked the Sixth Sense, but chiefly because Toni Collette (sp) is a babe.

And, returning to Signs with a modifying attempt at fairness, I only saw the last half of it, because I spent the first half of it waiting for the girl that was supposed to meet me at Time's Square to see it, which wasn't funny or thrilling at all, but just really boring and sad.

I  liked unbreakable a lot two years ago but my views have changed have to see it again. it wasn't one of those movies that deserves the director to promote it using tarentino tactics, though. "the fourth movie by shamalong."  i think he thinks that he's better than he really is.

I once had a certain artistically-inclined roommate who owned Unbreakable on DVD and would watch it once every roughly two or three weeks.  While he watched it he would make various sounds and comments such as, "Ohhhh" and "God!  He's brilliant" and "That shot - it's so subtle", and despite all this I still liked this movie very much and despite his similar statements about Signs I still hated that movie very much.  This same roommate once forced me to watch the third installment of the Jurassic Park series, making similar claims of brilliance (those of you that have seen the third installment of Jurassic Park understand that I have just made a very amusing comment.  Those of you that haven't seen it - pretend that there was no third installment; for that matter pretend that there was no second installment).

As for the Village, despite the fact that I predicted the absolutely ridiculous plot twist about 25 minutes into the film and was stuck sitting in the third row of one of those theatres that should not have rows 1-5 because of the inevitable neck trouble it causes those seated in those rows, I still found it largely enjoyable mostly because of the character development and acting.  I also happen to like Mr. M for at least making movies that don't make me feel like I've seen them all before.
