I do believe this time im not in the wrong - i didnt claim that i believed a) i was merely covering all the bases with this statement-
"Point being that youve judged her and recommended the film accordingly"
I had hoped to imply that you were doing the latter of the two options.
So anyway, piont being that youve judged your mother to be the type of person to enjoy the movie, whereas i barged in and recommended Oldboy to everyone - i didnt consider (much) who i was recommending it to - if my mum had wasnt into shitty films, and more into this type of film, i would have recommended it to her, but she's not, so i'll recommend miss congeniality over and over again.
From now on all recommendations from me shall be as such -
I have an odd taste in films...and life I like films that test me and films which are cleverly confusing... I like the surreal... I'm often referred to as a weirdo... And I'm recommending... Pumping Iron.
So people can then choose from (the little) what they know about me to see whether they might like the film.

Well, I really liked your thoughts on these movies, and I haven't seen most of them but plan on seeing them soon. (The ones that were recommended, not the others).
So, thank you.

I think...
Not recommending certain films to certain people and Where 'the line' is drawn when it comes to exxxcessive things in films (or maybe just violence)
I think... i was leaning the discussion towards where the line should be drawn or if it should. this might delve into the conversation about good ideas and bad ideas and how bad ideas can be extremely dangerous--not necessarily disregarded or ignored, but be should be handled with extreme attentiveness.

Anyone think there shouldn't be any lines at all? I'm not saying for kids, or for the easily offended, yada yada.

Often people say that there shouldnt be any lines (not just with films - with loads off stuff throughout life), I'm sometimes one of those people. It would be brilliant to have no lines and for everyone to be mature enough and have the same opinions so that no one stepped on anyones toes, or dreams come to think of it. But unfortunately we live in a world where people are oh so stupid, Im sometimes the stupid one. People have differing opinions so certain people inflict theirs onto others in the name of what is right - laws and stuff i suppose. I believe I'm right about nearly all i believe in - the nearly is because some stuff im not sure about.
(sorry this is so jumbled, im not thinking structurally and just typing as the thought comes into my head)
People shouldnt apologise for being right - surely we all think our opinions are right (right?) otherwise we'd change them. Anyway off the topic a bit. The line. Yes I think there should be a line - none of the films we've mentioned so far have crossed the line for me (possibly caligula - is it real sex?) but lately there have been quite a few films where ive considered 'the line' ('baise moi''Intimacy''9 songs') they've all contained real sex(in one form or another) so where id definately draw the line at porn - its diffucult when these arnt necessarily there for pleasure. Ive often had arguments that the O.C. is far worse an influence (and therefore over the line) because programs like this (not to mention sex and the city and Dawson creek) do far more to undermine young people (who i imagine the main audience is) in thier relationships than some foriegn language film with real sex that not many people are likely to see - and those who are likely to see it are more mature. I dunno - all this crap is stuff im not sure about, not many definate opinions here, just a ramble of possible paths for my thoughts to take...

Bro, how about you rewrite that post so my brain doesn't feel like scrambled eggs trying to read it. Length is no substitute for content.

Bro, how about you rewrite that post so my brain doesn't feel like scrambled eggs trying to read it. Length is no substitute for content. My Dear Mr. Esposito (as I've come to enjoy adressing you): I thought this was a funny response, but only funny because I usually think it's funny when somebody says something mean, and not necessarily fair; JJHards response was really not altogether too hard to navigate through, and he even apologized for it being "so jumbled." Which was very consciencious of him. But to Mr. JJHards: I think a line, some form of boundary, is essential to art, if only for the tension created when some filmmaker is stepping dangerously close to it, or even (provided he has earned it) breaking it. It is only interesting if somebody shoots somebody in a movie if everyone is pretty sure that he shouldn't shoot somebody. Then you know he is taking drastic (and dramatic!) measures. The same is true for somebody throwing down a glass in an argument. My brother and I were talking about this earlier, and it seems that nowadays everybody throws a glass whenever they get into an argument, and with no discretion concerning the line which states that throwing a glass is not a proper way to express one's frustration. If it is generally recognized that people should calmly talk things through it is much more fun when somebody finally starts throwing shit all over the place. I know, because at the end of our discussion about this my brother was so excited that he grabbed the nearest glass of water in the coffee shop and flung it across the room. Everybody got very excited. And so if there were no lines, no boundaries, there would be no tension. A complete disregard of boundaries (as if they were never there in the first place, or at least never ought to have been) makes for a boring piece of work, whatever the content. This is roughly what I think considering most boundaries, but as far as sex in movies goes, it's always cool as hell.

Ok, Im not sure if were talking about different lines here...Im talking more about censorship and your talking about art...are they different lines? With your point I agree totally, I was reading an article by Maddox the other day, he was complaining about how there are no special effects in the new star wars film...because they're in every scene, there's nothing special about them! I was reminded of this, anyway. There does (most of the time(only because i dont want to commit myself to such a statement)) need to be a line - like zooey said - for tension. Anyone seen 'Audition'? Just to ruin the film the film maker lowers the line throughout the first hour and a half of the film, then runs in and stomps on your face with the last half hour. But with all these people (me included - i too freely say 'cunt') not caring about the line and throwing glass whenever they feel, the line is slowly getting lowered. I suppose what im talking about here is a line which exists - which no one has control over? I dunno. I think we should have a line because otherwise we'd all be fucking and fighting everyone.

Which was very consciencious of him. Having come to the end of a 12 hour workday, I did have difficulty putting together what Mr. Hards was saying. His admission and apology to me was not concientious, but lazy. I was not trying to be mean; perhaps it's simply the teacher in me coming out. And to the Hard One himself, my apologies. I would not have said such a thing if I didn't think you were capable of more. But seriously, I do think you have something to say, and I was frustrated at not being able to sift through it. I'm all for stream-of-consciousness, but when you're posting on a forum, it's just a matter of respect to go back and delete your "ums", if you know what I mean. When someone vomits, no one thinks to go over to the mess and pick out the little bits of food. Unless of course, you don't know any better. Or if, as is often the case on this forum, you're so starved you're willing to do so. Has anyone seen my line? I seem to have misplaced it.

I think we should have a line because otherwise we'd all be fucking and fighting everyone. The thing is, you can control your own life and your own art. To the degree that a piece of art creates its surroundings, it doesn't matter what a culture's boundaries are. A good filmmaker can take a simple specific touch and make it crackle with sexuality. The difference is which colors from the palette he chooses to use in setting the stage. (Mixed metaphors, I know. Aren't I concientious!)

Im all for controlling my own work, but I dont believe I have total control over my own life - there's too much happening around that shapes us - it would take someone incredible to be able to put the world aside and be as they are.
Then to add to this I always want my art to be based in reality - in some form or another - and the only reality that I understand is my own. Shaped by the world around me and the lines that I dont control.
(By the way, that jumbled thought - it was just me being lazy, but it was lazy or not at all - im not sure which is better)

To add...
I dont like your metaphor/analogy/similie* thing about being sick and people picking up the pieces. That implies that there somethings i said which were meaningless and some good things, whereas i see at more of a sorting out - more like someone chucking up a 3 course meal, and people nearby sorting it out so they dont have to eat roast beef mixed with apple strudel.
Ive just read the above and found it to be hostile, but i dint mean it that way - but for lack of finding another way to re-write it whilst keeping the same meaning, ill leave it as it it - no offences please.
